Current ExhibitionOsvaldo TrujilloAncient FutureJune 30 – August 18, 2013 CB1 Gallery is pleased to present Ancient Future, Osvaldo Trujillo’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Inspired by a recent trip to Peru, Ancient Future, is an exploration of the relationships between civilizations, spanning time. The exhibition will be on display from June 30 through August 18, 2013, with a reception for the artist on Sunday, June 30, 5 – 7 p.m. Everything falls apart. Our presence is defined only by what we know of the past and what we don’t know of the future. Regardless of how we’ve advanced, every civilization faces decay. It’s the one constant. The mandalic pieces in Ancient Future represent the chaotic forces that give life and death to cultures. The ancients seemed to be more aware of this, maybe because they had evidence of civilizations just as advanced as theirs that existed far before. While this recurring view informed many facets of ancient life and beliefs., contemporary life seems to be less and less like that, less cyclical more digital. We are the “state of the art” in terms of knowledge and technology. Have we broken the cycle? It is the artist’s belief that since we are finite, whatever comes from us is finite too. Until we can change that, everything will continue to fall apart. Expanding on his past series of drawings, Osvaldo Trujillo’s paintings continue to showcase the artist’s study and creation of alternative realities. The artist focuses on issues of structural symmetry, the cognizance of form and function, and the combined use of organic and mechanical abstraction as a formal device. Trujillo’s work in Ancient Future is informed by his fascination with Pre-Columbian cultures, mid-century utopian architecture, and the rise and demise of civilizations. Osvaldo Trujillo is a visual artist and professor, based in Los Angeles. In addition to past exhibitions at CB1 Gallery, his work has been shown at POST Gallery, Peggy Phelps Gallery, Art FrankFurt, Germany. He is currently represented by CB1 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. Trujillo graduated with an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, Los Angeles and teaches at both at USC and Loyola Marymount University. |
