CB1 Gallery is proud to present Hilde Overbergh’s first solo gallery exhibition in Los Angeles, Repositioning Basics. Continuing her interest in the confrontation between nature and culture, the paintings on view explore the pictorial space, where the physicality of painting and the play with architectural elements, in all senses, become the subject of the picture.The exhibition will be on view from Sunday, September 11 through Sunday, October 16, 2011. An opening reception for the artist will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2011, 5 – 7 p.m.

Blending abstraction and representation, Hilde Overbergh’s new work uses re-contextualized snap shots of interior spaces as a starting point for her compositions. Major alterations occur in the process of the transformation from the original snapshots/collages to the artist paintings, achieving an abstract spatial dualism. Moving away from the recognizable images of architectural space, and by repositioning elements like a chair, a table, a curtain or a corner of a room, the paintings create ambiguity through using multiple viewpoints.

Overbergh’s paintings are the result of deconstruction of the physical reality; combining different realities to an entirely new, more abstract interpretation. Peeling away the layers of each image, the artist seeks to reduce it to its essence. Objects are separated from their original context, introduced into new settings, re-assembled but always return to the spatial relationship also seen in cubism. In so doing, the recognizable objects are deprived of their purpose and made non-functional.

Belgian artist Hilde Overbergh returned to her native country in the early 90s, following her years studying in the United States. She is currently working on a project for the public space, Museum M, in Leuven, Belgium, which will be on view in the fall of 2011. Her work was seen in two group exhibitions in Los Angeles in 2010, The Story of O at Otis College of Art and Design and For Your Pleasure at CB1 Gallery. In Europe, her work has been seen in exhibitions including De Markten in Brussels, Belgium, glocal affairs in Maastricht, Netherlands, betrekkelijk rustig in the Castle of Oud-Rekem and the cultural center of Hasselt, Belgium. She received a BFA from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, and a European masters in visual arts from PH Limburg in Belgium.
