CB1 Gallery proudly announces Los Angeles based artist, Alexander Kroll’s second solo exhibition at the gallery entitled The Florist, The Loquat and Yes. The artist presents a body of work that explores the depth and possibility of the language of abstraction through the gesture, drips and splatters, veils of light and color bleeding like glass. These new paintings create enterable spaces where artist and viewer can interact and explore the experiences that lie beneath the work’s surface.

The exhibition will be on view from November 18, 2012 through January 6, 2013. An opening reception for the artist will take place on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Issues only hinted at in Kroll’s earlier paintings—the relationship to the body and painting as an architectural portal—are more obvious in the noticeably larger work in The Florist, The Loquat and Yes. In all of Alexander Kroll’s new paintings, the layering of information extends beyond the physical authority of the work. The painting “Am I An Imaginary Man?”, for example, presents a visual space that both draws the viewer into the work and optically projects into the viewers personal space. Some paintings, such as “Self Portrait with Ariel’s Leg”, feature areas of open space dominated by prominent gestures and color fields made of intimately scaled marks. Within all of his fascinating pictorial fields, the artist presents us with new visions of illusionistic space through his navigation of paint that is both innovative and assured.

Alexander Kroll received his MFA from Otis College of Art and Design and a BA from Yale University. In addition, he studied painting at the Slade School of Art, University College London. Kroll’s work has also been shown in solo exhibitions at James Harris Gallery (Seattle, WA) and in group exhibitions in Los Angeles at ACME, PØST, Latned Astar, The Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design and The UCLA New Wight Gallery; in New York at Lincoln Center; the Torrance Art Museum, (Torrance, CA), and Jessica Silverman Gallery, (San Francisco, CA). Kroll has curated a number of group exhibitions, and has taught and guest lectured at Otis College of Art and Design, Art Center College of Design, California State University Long Beach, Yale University and the Armory Center for the Arts.
